Recap of USA-S LC Zone Championship in Buffalo, NY

Thursday, 8/12/21

A week has now passed since my 100m breaststroke swim at the LC Zone Championships in Buffalo.  This is a meet I have attended several times in the past.  With a long day ahead, I woke up at 5am, left the house at 5:30am and headed on the almost 2.5hr drive with enough time to get 30 minutes of warm up in the big pool.  This is the first time I have touched a LCM pool since the US Open in December 2019, but it feels familiar with the amount of open water breaststroke I have done over the pandemic.  I had high expectations going into this meet with the 55.35 SCY time that I had posted at USMS Nationals in Greensboro, NC two weeks prior.  I maintained my taper (off of minimal training to begin with…) and was hoping for even a fraction of the 1.8sec drop that I had.  Realistically, I was looking for a 1:04 anything to finally break the 1:05 barrier which I have been consistently at since 2014.

Warm-ups went well with a few 32-33s from a push.  My prelims time felt comfortable at a 1:05.20 (30.59/34.61).  Despite the best time by 0.05sec, I was expecting a bit more from the morning swim.  I had a long finish to clean up and needed to use a little more speed on the front end than I did.   Oh well, that is what prelims/finals meets are all about.  It was nice to know that I had another chance tonight.

Finals

100 Breast - 30.27/34.42 1:04.69 - PB by 0.51

I relaxed as much as I could during the break, but there wasn’t much open in downtown Buffalo so I returned to the pool and made myself comfortable while watching a movie.   For finals, I was excited to get back in the pool since it was quite a warm day outside.  For the swim, I managed to go out quicker and still hold on.  The better finish helped, but I was just happy to get my hand on the wall first and see the 1:04.69 on the board.  (30.27/34.42).    I think there was still room to go out even harder and under 30 seconds, but I will have to save that for USMS LCM Nationals in October.
